Cutting-edge Technology Meets Striking Building Design

Rapid expansion and the decision to move to a new activity based working model, has seen NZ energy provider Trustpower outgrow their former head office and move to a new purpose-built facility in the Tauranga CBD.

Trustpower have recently adopted an activity-based working model for their staff which they have called 'Synergy New Ways of Working' – a concept very similar to hot desking but with a range of different spaces for different types of activities such as meetings, collaboration, private work, creativity and focus work. To offset the lack of an assigned desk, each of the company's 500-plus staff members has been allocated their own access-controlled storage locker for storing devices and belongings.

Having used ICT's ProtegeGX access control and intrusion detection system at their former premises, Trustpower were pleased with the reliability and functionality the system offered so didn’t hesitate to stick with the proven performer when they relocated. Along with the proven ProtegeGX platform, they needed something that could handle more than 500 battery-powered lockers in a secure and integrated environment.

To conform with aesthetics and control costs, lockers couldn’t be hardwired, so Salto XS4 locks were chosen because they integrate well with ProtegeGX and the wireless design meant there is no need for messy cabling. Locks are fitted wirelessly and programmed to read, receive and write information via the same smart card (or credential) that staff use to access other areas around the building, while Salto update readers are connected to the ProtegeGX server over the network. As staff present their card to an update reader, the on-card data is uploaded to the ProtegeGX system and any changes to user related information are written back to the card.

A key strength of the ProtegeGX solution is ease of use for Trustpower's IT service department and the integration options the system offers. In addition to the Salto locks, Trustpower have also installed a Geutebrück CCTV system with 27 cameras that is integrated with ProtegeGX.
