Every Door. Every Campus. Every Second.

Hale Center ISD, Guardian Security Solutions & ICT

How Guardian Security Solutions gave Hale Center ISD district-wide visibility over every campus entry—and lockdown control in seconds.

Project Highlights

Before:

  • Separate door habits and manual checks with no centralized visibility
  • Staff propped doors open with no way to track it in real time
  • Alerts limited to emails and texts that were easy to miss
  • No single view of door status for administrators or school resource officers

After:

  • District-wide door status monitoring across all campuses via Protege GX
  • Custom e-maps display every monitored door on a dedicated 24/7 monitor
  • Color-coded indicators: green (closed), red (open beyond approved threshold)
  • Manual lockdown buttons in admin offices and mobile app access for authorized staff

District-Wide Door Monitoring & Lockdown

Solution

Protege GX e-map status page shown on a dedicated wall-mounted monitor
It's a visual addition to their security that's hard to ignore. Everyone gets emails and texts, but they can put those off. With this screen on the wall, if a door is left open, they see it—and they act.

The Story

A Rural District. A Real Vulnerability.

Hale Center ISD serves students in a part of Texas where resources are stretched and campuses sit far from major cities. Over the years, the district had built up a patchwork of access control points, cameras and monitoring systems that still depended heavily on staff habits and manual checks. Doors got propped open. Alerts went to email inboxes that were easy to overlook during a busy school day. No one had a clear, real-time picture of whether every exterior door across every campus was actually closed and locked.

When a tragic school shooting in Texas exposed how a single unsecured door can change everything, district leaders took a hard look at their own campuses. The problem wasn't a lack of effort. It was a lack of visibility.

From Missed Alerts to a View No One Can Ignore

Guardian Security Solutions had worked with ICT for over eight years, deploying Protege GX for customers across rural Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Hale Center ISD was already running Protege GX for access control, including threshold-based alerts when a door stayed open too long. But Rod Tieszen, Security Advisor at Guardian, pushed the thinking further: what if door status couldn't be ignored at all?

Using Protege GX's e-map features, Guardian designed custom campus maps that plot every monitored door onto a clear visual layout. Doors display green when closed and switch to red when left open beyond a defined threshold, long enough to account for normal traffic flow, short enough to flag a real risk. Guardian and the district then installed a dedicated monitor in each campus's administrative office, separate from anyone's personal workstation, running 24/7 on the wall. No application to open. No report to chase. Superintendents, principals and school resource officers can all glance up and understand the state of every exterior door at a moment's notice.

Lockdown Control When Seconds Matter

Alongside visual monitoring, each campus has manual lockdown buttons in administrative offices, giving principals and superintendents the ability to secure doors quickly when they judge a threat to be credible. The same controls are accessible through the ICT mobile app for authorized staff, so decision-makers aren't tied to a single location.

Hale Center ISD kept human judgment at the center of the design. A separate panic system handles law enforcement alerts when needed, letting school leaders distinguish between a routine incident and a genuine emergency while still taking rapid physical action on doors.

The Outcome

Since the solution went live in 2024, Hale Center ISD has experienced strong reliability. When a door stays open beyond the allowed window, it turns red on the e-map. Staff investigate and close it. That shift from an abstract alert to a shared, visible signal has turned door security into a daily collective habit rather than an occasional audit.

The only issue Guardian recalls since go-live was a hardware fault with a display monitor, quickly resolved and unrelated to Protege GX. For a small rural district, that kind of predictable performance matters. It keeps maintenance costs in check and reinforces confidence that when the e-map shows green, the doors really are secured.

Guardian Security Solutions now brings this approach to other schools and public-sector customers across their territory. For districts without the budgets of large urban systems, the combination of ICT’s capabilities and Guardian’s deep knowledge of rural environments offers a compelling balance of security, flexibility and predictable economics.

There are bigger, more expensive systems out there, but ICT gives our customers what they actually need—without the huge renewal costs. For districts like Hale Center, that value and responsiveness make all the difference.
