Unified and Touch-Free at Landspitali

Landspitali National University Hospital — Healthcare

The Challenge

Landspitali, the National University Hospital of Iceland in Reykjavik, is the country’s largest employer and the birthplace of approximately 70% of all Icelandic babies. With over 100 buildings across 17 sites, the hospital operated with a fragmented security infrastructure: multiple disconnected alarm systems with no unified overview, inefficient user management for 10,000+ active staff members, no building automation capabilities, and ongoing costs from physical key management and re-keying procedures. The hospital also needed to reduce surface contact points to improve hygiene across clinical areas.

The Solution

Working with Iceland-based certified integrator Securitas, Landspitali deployed Protege GX hospital-wide as a unified platform combining:

  • Access control and intrusion detection across 1,000+ doors managed centrally
  • HR database connectivity via SOAP Web Service for automatic credential provisioning and deactivation
  • Building automation integration for lighting and area controls
  • Video management system integration with video doorbells for remote door release
  • Elevator access control with floor restrictions based on staff authorization levels
  • Automatic door openers activated by credential presentation for touch-free, hygienic entry
  • Mobile alert capability delivering alarms and events directly to security patrol devices

Key Outcomes

  • 1,000+ doors managed from a single centralized platform across 17 sites
  • 10,000+ card holders under a single credential system
  • Single credential replacing multiple physical keys for doors, elevators, medicine cabinets, and cafeteria payments
  • Automatic HR synchronization eliminating manual user updates and deactivating credentials when staff leave
  • Touch-free access throughout clinical areas improving hygiene compliance
  • Decreased security response times with mobile alerts to patrol guards
  • Cost savings through automated building functions and elimination of physical key management
  • Role-based authorization restricting sensitive areas including pharmacies and medicine cabinets
