Powering Your Success with Upgraded PSUs

Reliable Power, Reliable Security

Every access control system is only as dependable as its power supply. Readers, controllers, locks, and sensors all rely on clean, consistent power to function correctly. A power supply failure does not just cause inconvenience — it can compromise the security of an entire facility.

ICT has released upgraded power supply units (PSUs) for the Protege platform, delivering enhanced performance, better diagnostics, and greater resilience for installations of all sizes.

What’s New

The upgraded PSUs introduce several improvements designed to make life easier for installers and more reliable for end users:

Increased Output Capacity

The new units deliver higher sustained output, supporting more devices per PSU. This means fewer power supplies per installation, reducing hardware costs and simplifying cabinet layouts.

Enhanced Battery Management

Improved battery charging and monitoring circuitry extends battery life and provides more accurate reporting on battery health. The system can detect degraded batteries before they fail, allowing proactive replacement during scheduled maintenance rather than emergency callouts.

Integrated Diagnostics

The upgraded PSUs report detailed power metrics directly to the Protege controller, including:

  • Input voltage and current
  • Output voltage and current per channel
  • Battery voltage and charge status
  • Temperature readings
  • Fault conditions and history

These metrics are visible in the Protege GX or Protege WX interface, giving security managers and installers real-time visibility into power system health without opening a cabinet.

Improved Thermal Performance

A redesigned thermal management system allows the PSUs to operate reliably across a wider temperature range, making them suitable for installations in unconditioned spaces, rooftops, and outdoor enclosures.

Why Power Matters

In access control, power failures have immediate consequences:

  • Magnetic locks release, potentially allowing unauthorized entry
  • Controllers may lose communication with the head-end, creating blind spots
  • Readers go offline, locking out legitimate users

Battery backup provides a safety net, but only if the batteries are healthy and the charging system is working correctly. The upgraded PSUs address this by providing continuous monitoring and early warning of any power issues.

Compatibility

The upgraded PSUs are fully compatible with all current Protege GX and Protege WX controllers and can be used as direct replacements in existing installations. No firmware updates or configuration changes are required — simply swap the unit and the system recognizes it automatically.
