Loiter Areas

When a user must transit through an area to get somewhere else, the Loiter Areas feature can be used to ensure they don't linger in the transit area. This is a common requirement in carparks, when a user must transit the public parking area to reach their designated parking space.

How it works

When a user enters the defined loiter area, a timer is started. If the user does not exit the loiter area within that defined time, they are placed into a virtual 'holding area' and prevented from exiting the loiter area. At this point, they must contact an authorised person who can reset their status via software or a keypad.

Loiter Areas can only be used with Anti-Passback enabled and must use entry and exit readers on all access points.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Loiter Areas feature?

Loiter Areas is an ICT Protege feature that ensures users transit through an area rather than linger in it. It is commonly used in carparks, where users must pass through a public parking area to reach their designated parking space and the system needs to prevent them from staying in the transit zone too long.

How does Loiter Areas work?

When a user enters a defined loiter area, a timer is started. If the user does not exit within the configured time, they are placed into a virtual holding area and prevented from exiting the loiter area normally. At that point, they must contact an authorized person who can reset their status via the Protege software or a keypad.

What is required to use Loiter Areas?

Loiter Areas can only be used with Anti-Passback enabled, and the access points to the loiter area must use both entry and exit readers. Without this configuration, the system cannot reliably track when a user has entered or exited the area.

Where is Loiter Areas commonly used?

Carparks are the most common use case: a user transits the public parking area to reach their reserved space, and Loiter Areas ensures they cannot remain in the transit zone indefinitely. The same pattern applies to any access scenario where a transit corridor connects two secured spaces and lingering should be discouraged.

Which ICT products support Loiter Areas?

Loiter Areas is configured in both Protege GX and Protege WX, paired with Anti-Passback and entry/exit readers at every access point to the loiter area.
